Series 8 originally debuted in 2008 as a collection. Its distinctive feature was an innovative 8-part case structure for the time, based on an urban and modern concept. The collection was temporarily discontinued in 2014, but in 2021, eight years later, the new Series 8 was relaunched. Simple and modern. Simplicity through subtraction. While inheriting the design concept known as the 'aesthetic of subtraction,' the brand has restarted as a mechanical watch that combines the specifications and presence demanded today.

In terms of specific styling, the case is characterized by sharp surfaces that balance straight and curved lines. While inheriting the concept of the first generation, we subtracted sculptural elements to create a more modern impression. We were also conscious of the sense of 'solidity,' a term often used among designers. As the word suggests, 'solidity' refers to a condensed three-dimensional feel, as if the watch were carved from a block of metal. The form, which is sharp yet not too light and has a weight suitable for the wrist, is one of the charms of this model.

Creating elements that become the brand's icon.

While the brand name Series 8 has been inherited, the project started not as a mere revival of the old series, but with the aim of creating a new mechanical watch suitable for the present day. When creating a model that would become the face of the brand, we were conscious from the early stages of incorporating iconic shapes somewhere. What kind of form is instantly recognizable yet not overly assertive? We spent a lot of time considering this. Ultimately, we adopted a split structure for the bezel, achieving a shape that balances strength and precision.

One of the major advantages of dividing the parts is that it broadens the range of colors and finishes. This makes it easier to create color variations by differentiating between polished and hairline finishes or changing the plating color, thus expanding the depth of the model lineup. The symmetrical 'U' shapes facing each other are inspired by U-shaped magnets. This is because the movement installed in this model has magnetic resistance.

The crown was newly designed for Series 8. Its diameter is made larger for easier winding, and its height is kept short so that the feel of the mainspring is transmitted to the fingertips. While the front often features brand logos and such, we deliberately pared away unnecessary elements, applying only a circular hairline finish to the flat surface to emphasize a solid texture.

We also created multiple samples to consider the coarseness of the hairline finish on the band and case. One of the characteristics of metal is the tool marks left after machining. To express this, we adopted a coarser hairline finish than usual. If it is too coarse, the edges become too sharp, so we adjusted it to a level that is not uncomfortable to the touch.

Being modern.

As a design direction, the keyword 'modern' was often heard from the planning stage. What people perceive as modern differs from person to person, so translating it into a design language and embodying it was a challenge and a significant part of the work. Being modern means incorporating current trends to some extent, and as long as trends are incorporated, it is inevitable that it will look outdated over time. However, just as fashion is said to revive every 20 years, I look forward to seeing how this watch will appear when trends come full circle. It is a unique pleasure of a mechanical watch, which, if used properly, will never decay.

The Tension and Precision of Machinery

The PROMASTER E210 RACING CONCEPT is a model born from an in-house design competition in 2023, which challenged participants to design the "101st watch." As the name RACING suggests, the design concept is to incorporate the unique density, precision, and tension found in machines such as racing cars and motorcycles into a watch. While there are many watches inspired by cars and racing, each manufacturer interprets "automotive" and "racing" elements differently. For this project, we focused on what a CITIZEN-like interpretation of racing elements would look like in the design.

Nostalgic Future

When conceptualizing this model, I wanted to start by thinking about various things without deciding on a direction first. These included thoughts about the world, about time, about CITIZEN, and about my own interests. Below, I will summarize these thoughts little by little.

Strength and Charm

With the maturation of globalization and the information society, we have entered a complex era where countless people and information intersect. Furthermore, the uncertainty brought about by pandemics and conflicts is increasing. In such circumstances, I thought that, in the end, all we can do is live through the present with all our might and continue to possess the "strength" to do so. This led me to try designing a watch as a kind of survival tool to support that strength—this is what I wanted to attempt with this model.

Evolved Watch

The RECORD LABEL 1984 chronograph is a modern refinement of CITIZEN's first multifunctional analog quartz watch with three motors, the 'SPORTE' series, which was released in 1984. While retaining the unique atmosphere of 1980s watches, it has been updated for practicality and environmental consideration by adopting a light-powered movement.
