Open Workspace
The workspace is designed to be as open as possible to encourage communication. Partitions are set at eye level when seated, creating a layout that maintains focus without distractions.
Designers’ desks are grouped together, with tables arranged so that group meetings can be held immediately by simply turning around. The flow of movement is designed to balance communication and concentration, allowing for stress-free interaction.
Creative Space for Co-Creation
Next to the workspace, there is an open area for meetings and workshops. It is a space where not only designers but also members from planning and PR departments can gather and freely exchange ideas.
Products currently on sale are displayed on the walls, allowing for immediate hands-on review. Items and prototypes that reflect the history of design are also exhibited within easy reach, inspiring visitors.
Library
Within the office, there is a library area stocked with books on the latest design trends and watches from around the world and throughout history. All back issues of watch magazines are archived, allowing you to look back on trends and milestones from each era.
A space by the windows is provided for taking breaks or reading books. In this comfortable area, you can relax and deepen your knowledge.
Soft light pours in through large windows overlooking the western Tokyo view, and it’s common to see designers checking prototype samples in natural light.
Glass Board
Glass boards that double as partitions are placed throughout the floor to visually output ideas. Designers use them freely to stick notes or prop up boards for sharing ideas.
Workshop
At the back of the floor, there is a room equipped with a 3D printer and a small photo booth. Here, prototypes are created, watches are tinkered with, and photos are taken. To improve quality, it’s important to handle actual samples as much as possible.
This characterful desk is an old workbench once used for repairing and assembling watches. We cherish it, having received it from another department, captivated by its well-worn texture developed over many years of use.
Coming up with new ideas is difficult and often influenced by the environment or serendipitous discoveries. That’s why CITIZEN’s design office values a "comfortable space for concentration," "casual communication," and "input in a relaxed state." The office is constantly evolving to increase the reproducibility of those chance discoveries.
We hope this article gives you a glimpse into the kind of environment where CITIZEN’s designs are born.
